In Honor of Dr. King and His dream.

As we discussed what today is with our children it sparked conversation which led to a few youtube videos which led to more discussion. I think hearing my daughter say "thats my favorite part" to Rosa Parks emphatic NO was a moment I won't forget. It was a moment of realization that she has learned to stand up for herself, for her brother, for equality, for our family and others. You see over the last three years my children have seen the ugliness of prejudice, the grace we can pour out on others even in that ugliness, the beauty of adoption, and the love for a small brown boy we call brother, son, one of us.

While I have always known there was prejudices out there I understand it on a much deeper, more personal level then I ever did before. We have come a long way but there is still so much more that needs to change. There are still people who view people differently because of their skin. This breaks my heart.

As I reflect on what today stands for I am more and more humbled at what God has called us to not just with adoption but that He's called us to cross cultural and racial lines. His complete and perfect love for us demonstrated through adoption and multi cultural families. He didn't choose us based on the color of our skin. He adopted us because He loved us SO much. He gave up His son so that we might live with Him forever in heaven. Why on earth would anyone who calls themselves a Christ follower think anything less of someone with a different skin color? I will never understand yet it is an unfortunate reality. Though I will never understand I will continue to pour out grace while standing firm that the color of your skin has absolutely ZERO value on who we are in Christ. We are all equal. We are all humans made in the image of God.

When Silas first got home we had a professional photographer come and do our pictures - this was one of her ideas and I love it. (Thanks Ruby!) Its more then just joining hands. Its joining families - together strengthening the force of breaking down the walls of prejudice, advocating for racial equality.
